Expelling all the air from your lungs and balancing on your fingers and toes is harder than you think; it’s even harder when you are fully submerged in a tank of water. Still, hydrostatic testing is one of the more accurate ways to get a body fat reading.
I can see my abs
On February 8th this year, I decided to set a new step-goal of seeing my abs. I can recall the date explicitly, as it’s the same day I signed-up for Adam Bornstein’s Getting Shredded event. Two months later… BOOM; abs!
Yup, that’s not stock imagery on on the right, that’s me sporting my new six-pack!
So what was different this time around?
I think I need a refeed
I’m working on getting shredded, aiming to reach single-digit levels of body fat. And I am making progress; down 12lbs and at least 2-3% of body fat from my ~15% starting point. And for perspective, at a starting weight of 168lbs, that’s a 7%+ drop in overall body weight.
No warmup, no workout
I’ve been having all sorts epiphanial moments of late, especially about my physical state and general approach to working out.
Epiphanial? Oh, I made that word up in a recent post; it’s a new adjective to describe those gut-wrenching pangs that accompany moments of sudden insight. (Hey, if Muggle and Blamestorming can make it in to the Oxford dictionary, so can epiphanial!)
Another epiphany? Really?
My life seems full of them, of late. No, not visitations from a celestial spirit… just more of those gut-wrenching pangs that accompany a moment of sudden insight.
They’ve been happening more frequently too, something I’ve put down to both advancing age and the company I’ve been keeping. It’s also part of my genetic disposition; always moving forward, always looking for answers — even to questions that probably don’t matter.
Progress and goals
After a couple of months of clean eating, intermittent fasting and, more recently, community coaching from Adam Bornstein, I am down 10lbs from 168lbs to 158lbs. I haven’t tested body fat again, but I certainly look and feel leaner; waist size is also down over an inch.

When it comes to health and fitness, the Internet is a mixed blessing. Yes, there is great information out there, but unfortunately, the good (useful, accurate, valuable) material is outnumbered 1,000,000:1 by inaccurate, misleading BS.
